“…[B]efore the Inquisition the Jews in Spain used olive oil for cooking, the Muslims used clarified butter, and the Christians used pork fat. After the expulsion, everyone switched to fat, and the conversos hung hams in their houses the way they hung crucifixes and rosaries – conspicuously, fearfully, hoping to convince Inquisitors on the prowl that Spain belonged entirely to Christ.”
